Description
The Master of Library Science degree prepares students for careers in librarianship. Employment settings include public, community college, and special libraries; school media centers; and other information centers. The program is approved by NCATE/AASL, NCDPI, and the NC Public Library Certification Commission. The objectives of the Master of Library Science (MLS) degree program are defined in terms of the desired educational objectives. Individuals who received the MLS are prepared to work in libraries, information centers, and related settings as professionals and are able to:* Develop, implement, monitor, and revise collection development policies to meet the changing needs of the community and/or institution served by the library.* Develop and/or maintain accepted systems and codes to the organization of library resources.* Answer reference questions using print and electronic resources;.* Identify and use appropriate technology to support, simplify, or enhance library functions.* Plan, organize, and manage library resources for the efficient administration of library operations.* Discuss ethic and legal issues, specifically censorship, intellectual freedom, and copyright, as they apply to a given library setting.* Plan, organize, and produce an electronic on-line document/website, for example, an electronic portfolio, related to a topic, individual, or librarianship-related activity.* Plan and instruct users and staff, separately or collaboratively, in the effective use of ideas and information.Admission Procedure: Applications are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Students applying to the Master of Library Science degree program must submit the following to the Graduate School: A completed Graduate School Application Package Official Transcript 3 Letters of ReferenceCourses required of all students: (24 s.h.)LIBS 6010 Foundation of Library and Information Studies (3) LIBS 6014 Introduction to Reference (3)LIBS 6018 Collection Development (3)LIBS 6026 Organization of Information in Libraries (3)LIBS 6031 Library Administration and Management (3)LIBS 6042 Technology for Library Services (3) LIBS 6991 Internship (3) (Required for students with less than 1 year experience as a librarian.)LIBS 6972 Research Methods in Library Science (3)orEDUC 6482 Trends and Issues in Educational Research for Practitioners (3)or SCI 6500 Understanding and Engaging in Research in Education (3) Additional courses required for Media Coordinator Licensure: (6 s.h.)LIBS 6140 Programs for School Library Media Centers (3) LIBS 6135 Books and Other Media for Children and Young Adults (3)Electives to bring total semester hours to 39.Students lacking a teaching certificate will have additional requirements including an early internship.Contact: Ms. Karen Mathis Student Manager E-mail: mathisk@mail.ecu.edu Phone: 252-328-4373
