Description

The MAEd in Special education is designed for teachers who hold initial certification in special education. The content of courses and the assignments within those courses presume a base of knowledge and experience appropriate to this education and experimental entry requirement. Students complete a total of 39 semester hours of study in the program to develop "advanced competencies" in the areas of Mental Retardation, Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, or Low Incidence Disabilities. The program is structured in a sequential, developmental manner which places a number of courses prerequisite to other courses. This design feature allows extension and expansion of content and experience as students move through the program. The design of the MAEd in Special Education incorporates two program strands: Mastery of Knowledge Base in Special Education and Mastery Level Teaching in Special Education. These strands, which cross individual course requirements, serve to develop, refine, and evaluate each student's ability to use and conduct research and to demonstrate mastery level teaching skills. Additionally, students in the program receive extensive training in Assistive Technology, Partnerships and Collaboration, Addressing Diversity in Schools, Research for School Improvement and Assessment.MAEd Program:ELED/ADED 6550 Leadership and Communication Skills in Education (3)SCIE 6500 Understanding and Engaging in Educational Research (3)-or-EDUC 6482 Introduction to Models of Education Research (3)EDUC 6001 Introduction to Differences in Human Learning in Schools (3)SPED 6002 Addressing Differences in Human Learning in Schools (3)Special Education Professional Studies (12 s.h.)SPED 6010 Issues, Trends, and Research in Special Education (3)SPED 6011 Integrating Technology into Special Education (3)SPED 6012 Assessment in Special Education (3)SPED 6013 Communication and Collaboration in Special EducationSpecial Education Requirements for all four specialty areas:SPED 6040 Internship in Special Education (3)SPED 7000/5502 Thesis/Product Development in Special Education (3)One electiveRequirements for Special Education - - Mental Retardation Elective from approved list (3)SPED 6020 Curriculum Development and Program Planning in Special Education for Students with Mild/Moderate Disabilities (3)SPED 6021 Instruction for Learners with Mental Retardation (3)Requirements for Special Education - - Learning Disabilities:Elective from approved list (3)SPED 6020 Curriculum Development and Program Planning in Special Education for Students with Mild/Moderate Disabilities (3)SPED 6022 Instruction for Learners with Learning Disabilities (3)Requirements for Special Education - - Behavioral/Emotional Handicaps Elective from approved list (3)SPED 6020 Curriculum Development and Program Planning in Special Education for Students with Mild/Moderate Disabilities (3)SPED 6023 Instruction for Learners with Behavioral/Emotional Handicaps (3)Requirements for Special Education - - Low Incidence DisabilitiesSPED 6030 Curriculum Development and Program Planning in Special Education for Students with Low Incidence Disabilities (3)SPED 6031 Instruction for Learners with Low Incidence disabilities (3)Contact: Dr. Sandra Hopfengardner Warren Special Education Programs Coordinator Phone: 252-328-2699 E-mail: warrens@mail.ecu.edu
