My experience so far at KU
July 17, 2011
I'm currently attending and tonight I started looking at FaceBook pages about it and suddenly I got worried. There are so many bad reviews out there, and it's kind of ridiculous. I'm going for my Bachelors of Science in IT and honestly, the only time I had an issue was when I first enrolled. The financial aid department kept telling me I needed to fill out the paperwork differently but it was all just a ...

Just Graduated BSIT/Database

I found my experience with Kaplan to be a good one. Many of the courses are challenging especially as they are conducted online and will require an extra effort to do well in. I can say that your own personal study habits will be the determining factor in your success or failure at this school, they don't just give away the diplomas(which is a good thing, otherwise the value of your degree would be worthless). ...

This was a horrible experience that I am still paying for. The Guidance Councilor that I was assigned encouraged me to increase my course load without telling me that it would require an additional $4000 out of pocket expenses! From the way she originally explained it, I was under the impression that my financial aid package could be tailored to cover it. Nope, and I also had a Pell Grant reversal that no one told ...

AAS IT Web Development @ Kaplan ~ Great School!
January 13, 2011
I have now been attending online courses at Kaplan for a year and it has been a great learning experience. I will recieve my AAS in IT Web Development and I will be re-enrolling to obtain my BAS in IT Web Development after I take a month or two off. The amount of information that I have retained is outstanding and I have gained a great deal of resources while attending at Kaplan. The online ...

Serious School for IT - Horrible student accounts department
December 20, 2010
The Good – Online courses through Kaplan are nothing to joke about. I've heard many people "putting down" online degrees, but after attending Kaplan University Online, I stand up for online schools. Kaplan has a solid set of instructors, Professors, and Doctors, to teach you what you need to know about IT. Compared with the various numbers of state colleges I've attended, Kaplan U deserves: 10 out of 10. As for the subject matter, it's ...

Kaplan - My Take
December 2, 2010
Right out of college I went to a tech school and obtained my associates at a technical school. This was ok for the time being, but I realized if I am going to make it anywhere a Bachelors would help significantly. So my search began. I looked at schools such as WGU, U of Pheonix, DeVry and others along with Kaplan. Kaplan seemed to have what I was looking for at a premium but I ...

I just finished with my Masters of Science in Information Technology and I must say I was very skeptical of joining an on line school because of all the bad press. However, one of my life goals is having a Masters degree and going to a brick and mortar school was not feasible. Kaplan is just like any school, there are good things and bad things about it and it all depends what you wish ...

Yep, I got a bad deal during the system wide upgrade. I got F's for those two classes. I was not able to access the system. But for some reason, I could access email only for about 3 weeks. The whole ordeal just snowballed on me. Now, I have to take the classes again. And, pay for them. That is BS and wrong. I am just now starting the new term and I am in the one class I should not even be in. The email and phone calls are useless. I either go with it or lose it all. But I will pay for it for going on with it. I am not finished with this BS. I was already a year into it. So, I am not going to blow all of the time I put in. I had a 3.97 CGPA. Now, it is like terrible until I retake these classes and get new grades. I feel cheated here. I am very frustrated about the whole thing. Not to mention being locked out because they lost my paper work a couple terms back. I ended up with B minuses due to that crap. It took the whole ten week term to get the paper work correct. I sent in the same ID, SSN, Phone, and address at least 15 times. I have not moved or changed my address or phone number. License and SSN I have had all my life.

These a s s/ h o l es owe me a break somewhere down the line.

I do not know what to say. I could go on and on.

I just enrolled my son in Kaplan's online high school and they provide a scholarship for stdents to attend Kaplan University. He is really into computers and has expressed interest in attending college to major in IT or something related.

Is Kaplan University a good way to get a degree like this? Is it respected in the field with employers and companies? Does anyone have any good examples?

Hey everyone, I'd like to thank you all for taking your time and sharing your mind views on Kaplan University. I have been carefully thinking about my decisions to join Kaplan and have read many great reviews that I am grateful for. I hope to attain my degree with Kaplan so that I may finally do what I have always wanted to do since high school, and I had graduated almost 7 years ago. As a single mom, Kaplan seems the best route so far and I am going to do it!. See you online!

I would like to know why people have so much troubles with Kaplan. I have had none what so ever. I was reading a couple reviews and i must say, People you get what you put into it. If you dont attend or if you play while in class your not going to learn anything and sure you may decide that Kaplan is bad. BUT if you do what your suppose to do in college and this learn and do things that are asked of you, everything will turn out great. As one guy said after he graduated, he went from 13k to over 50k with benifits. So please the people who are just thinking college is going to be a easy ride and you dont need to do nothing to get ahead stop posting. For the people who really try post all you want. I have a 3.9 GPA, and i know i am paying for a for profit school to where i will get out in 15 months and make great money. The credits that University of Lincoln Nebraska (Go Huskers!) is the same as Kaplan. Some may transfer to others schools, some may not. Get educated before ripping on something. Kaplan For life!

Any advice good or bad about the Kaplan here in Dearborn MI? Looking at the 12 month Electrical Technician program starting in October.Working with F.A. Do they seem to do a thorough job? Definitely would need $$$ for school as I'm currently only employed part time.Did anyone have better luck finding financial aid somewhere else?
Thanks

Soon to begin my 4th term, I am excited about all that Kaplan has to offer. Prior to contacting Kaplan late 2009, I had taken college courses off and on for twenty five years, never completing my college degree.

Kaplan recognized all my hard work from previous years, and transferred most credits into the program.

I have had no negative issues with Kaplan. The support staff has been responsive, the instructors superb, and each course of instruction challenging and rewarding.

The work is not easy. "Earning" a degree requires effort. Time must be sacrificed toward study, and one must immerse themself into the course work.

Lack of time management, failure to submit coursework, failure to participate in discussion boards, and missed deadlines all lead to loss of valuable points toward grades.

Go figure...a university that challenges students to reach high standards of academic performance. Any prospective student evaluating Kaplan as a place to earn a college degree should ask themself one honest question.

That question is "Am I a lazy individual who prefers to have everything come easy"?

If the answer is "Yes". Don't attend college anywhere, be happy with you High School Diploma. No college will award a degree to someone who does not do the work required to earn it.

To all who complained in previous comments, I do not dismiss your bad experiences as being false. I have been fortunate in my experience with Kaplan. It has been everything I expected and then some.

I graduate in 4 weeks (IT).....I am thrilled with Kaplan. Sure, like any other professors, some do more work than others. That is also true of the students. I will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 I have been there 2.5 years.
I have gotten 3 other people enrolled and attending Kaplan and they are doing well.

What most don't understand is that you have to DO THE WORK. With the convenience of going online, you might have to do some of the leg work yourself.
Bottom line: I would NOT have had exposure to the talented professors locally that I had online. Some of my professors had 3 and 4 degrees and were very knowledgeable and if I weren't so dang tired, I would continue on for my masters at KAPLAN.

If "IT" or your dream………… were easy, then everyone would have "IT"
I am very impressed with what I learned.

Good luck all..........Kaplan IS a good choice.

I started in Oct. 2008, I am still in earning my BS in IT. I have nothing bad to say, I don't care what school you attend you will face good and bad instructors. If you get a bad one, you do as you would at any school, work harder.

I have had no issues with money yet, as long as YOU stay on top of YOUR money, you wont either.

Seems to me by reading these posts, a lot of people are used to being spoon fed. YES you will have to work, YES it is challenging.

Just like any other school, there are things you will need to deal with. So far Kaplan seems like any other school

WOW! Nancy, I am sorry to hear what happened. I am working on my BA in Computer Forensic's here at Kaplan, and it will be my 5 term,so far the ONLY issues i have had with Kaplan is getting in contact with F.A (impossiable)!!I email my F.A Officer and to my suprise i get an automated email back to be stating she is not in her office, so, i call F.A finally after 45mins on hold i am directed to another aid who cannot help me, so, once again iam put on hold again!!!Finally get through but dont not get a direct answer to my question. The other issue i have came across is not getting the awards sent out after each term ia have been on my advisours ass about getting them to be in the mail, have held 3.85-4.0 i WANT thoses dam awards!!!!!

AS far as the professor's they are very knowledgeable in conducting a class and getting back to you in a timely matter at least in my experience. The classes are challenging but you need to be a motivator and do the work required in the week time frame.I have had no other issues with Kaplan only some minor issues. I feel it is a great University as long as you are motivated!and well worth the money as long as you get a job in the field of your degree to pay it back.

Here's a new one for you. I first started attenting Kaplan Online University in September 2009 pursuing a Bachelor in IT - Information Security and Computer Forensics. I did not like taking technical courses online because the instructors were not utilizing the workbooks for labs, were not responsive, were not helpful and I felt this was an ineffective way to learn. I didn't feel I was getting my money's worth so I went onto their website and found they offered these courses on campus in Hagerstown, MD.

I told the admissions advisor (John Nicklas) THREE TIMES which degree program I wanted to sign up for and also why I didn't want to take online courses. He said come on down and we'll take care of everything (financial aid, dormatory living, etc).

I sell everything I own, pack up and move to Hagerstown, MD from New Hampshire. Two weeks into my coursework I find out they do not offer computer forensic courses on campus!!!!!! WTF!!!!!! I turned my whole life upside down only to find out it was all for NOT.

This same "used car salesman" also duped me into thinking financial aid would cover the dorm and that was not the case, either. And to add insult to injury, he told me they would help me find work which was now mission critical due to the dorm not being covered and that turned out to be a bunch of BS, too.

I'm planning on moving back to New Hampshire, attend a college where they know what they are talking about and get an IT degree on campus. It just won't be a Bachelors with a concentration in Computer Forensics.

Take this review for what it's worth.

I am so disappointed with Kaplan University's Financial Department. I was blocked out of my account past 21 days and dropped. I had a balance of $1722 and did not know about the balance until it was past due, so they let the amount just build up. I was initially placed on a payment plan but no one felt they needed to inform me. Kaplan has no regard for communication. The Student Accounts Department and the Financial Aid Department is horrible, not everyone, but the ones that counted in my situation did poor work. My Financial Adviser obviously was not on her JOB. It took from November 2009 to February 2010 for me to get approved for the KC Loan. I went back and forth and talked to so many different people, that it was utterly ridiculous. I received a call that the loan was approved and was told to I had to go through the Returning Student Process. Ok, I did the paperwork they requested. That was a joke, especially since me being dropped was not my fault, it was Kaplan's. I called to see what was going on and she told me I still had a balance and that was preventing her from going on with the process. No one put notes on my account so that it was noted that the loan was approved. I had to call and talk to someone just to get that done. I will never go back to Kaplan for any type of future education. I only have 23 credits left because if it was possible and worth the trouble, I would transfer to another university and finish. This whole ordeal was Kaplan's fault, but I am the one suffering from their lack of communication.............

I gained my Associates in Information Technology back in December of 2006 and decided to get back in and go for my Bachelors. I'm excited. My initial experience with the Academic Advisor was a bit frustrating, but whatever. As soon as I am enrolled in the class it is up to me to do the coursework and interpret what the professors offer so, I'm a little excited to get this going!

KAPLAN IS A FINE SCHOOL

I just completed my Associate's in Information Technology in Web Development with an emphasis on Web Design. When I first chose to return to school after a long hiatus I did research Kaplan and other online colleges. I found through my research that Kaplan was a highly recommended and regarded university. With the tuition including the materials it was not anymore costly than other schools. You have to pay for a good education. So I enrolled.

Like everything that is new you are excited of the new changes faced with starting school. It did not seem hard to adapt to the online environment and it is very much like a regular classroom without seeing everyone's faces. Most of the classes are in audio which gives it more like an in person classroom. The admissions process went smoothly, financial aid has been extremely helpful and my advisor has ALWAYS returned my calls and periodically checks up on me.

I held a high GPA and received honors many terms. The classes were setup with a productive flow of learning materials. Each lesson lead to the next and encompassed all the materials into a final project. I found the Professors to be an excellent source of information and very helpful as well as encouraging to the students. There can be bad apples in every tree, but just because there is one does not mean the whole tree is bad.

As others have mentioned there are people that will have good and bad experiences, thus good and bad reviews. Do the research and make sure you can schedule enough time for studies, especially if you are working full-time and attending school and people with families definitely need to schedule extra time as life can be hectic.

Kaplan as a whole is a great university to attend for online courses. They include the course materials in the tuition so when comparing other schools verify all the costs of tuition. I have read some online schools do not use textbooks, only online materials and things through their schools online environment, Kaplan does not. They give you textbooks for the course and this is excellent even for the online classes. I know I don't want to lug my computer around all the time to read the learning materials, not only that having a textbook saves my eyes from having to be on the computer so long to study.

Overall I feel Kaplan has taught me the information I needed to advance into a new career field. I am taking a quick break and then returning for further learning with my Bachelor's degree. I encourage anyone researching online colleges to give Kaplan good thought, they are a great school, have great Professors, Advisors and Financial Aid. Just study, keep organized and manage your time efficiently and you will do excellent in the courses and if there is a problem talk to your Advisor, they are there to help and they do.

Thank you Kaplan and all my Professors. Good luck to everyone attending school to further their learning.

I have just registered for classes through Kaplan and to be honest, at first I was definately going to take another route! The first person I dealt with on the phone made it seem as though she was reading from a cue card and making you jump through hoops just to see if you were really interested. I don't know about you people but I'm a 44 year old single mother and I don't appreciate being treated like an elementary school student. Since then, while checking out other colleges, I receieved a phone call from Eli from Kaplan. He was very apologetic and actually helped me out so much that I have registered for classes there. So far they have been very helpful. The only thing I worry about is finding scholarships and grants to help lower the costs of tuition. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. So far I am impressed with Kaplan and with your comments about them!

While doing much of my research still on what college to choose from, I have found that Kaplan has more positive feedback than most online colleges. My only question is, does the degree mean anything? I mean do businesses take someone from Kaplan University over Phoenix? Where can I find graduation / job information.

I turned my last project in this Sunday to receive my Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology. I will admit that their online account system is horrible and it is sometimes hard to tell what you owe and for what, and is rarely up to date. However, other than that, I have had a very good experience.

I can tell from many of these reviews, that many of them "did not do their research" before they signed up. For one, every academic institution in the world increases their prices every year and it is most definitely in the contract you sign that they have the right to do that so you can disregard most of the "they're rip-offs" comments. They also sent me an email about every tuition increase. I did have some financial issues and they were very consistent about contacting me to correct them, but once they were corrected (usually the VA's fault) I had no problem with them.

Second, all of the materials I received for my classes were up to date and reasonably good books and/or software. On 2 occasions I did not receive my books before the beginning of the term and as soon as I called, they were promptly in the mail and delivered to me within 2 days.

Finally, a degree from Kaplan University requires a good work ethic and a sense of responsibility. They ARE flexible, but they have rules. The real flexibility is within each class you take by coordinating with your professor. Honestly who thinks you can set your books down whenever you want and come back whenever you want without paying for it? Take a loot at how real colleges do it and you'll see that Kaplan is no different.

There are a lot of negative comments up there and you'll notice that most of them are "Anonymous" and very many of them say "could learn more with a book from Amazon". I personally think that most of them are from one irresponsible and/or angry person. I also think that "Anonymous" posts are worthless. Put your name on it. Take responsibility for your post, unless responsibility is really what you have a problem with and not Kaplan.

I've been attending Kaplan U for two semesters now and I love it. I also attended ITT-Tech on campus and honestly, Kaplan seems to be better. Great professors and it's informative. I've learned more in two semesters than I did in two years at ITT. Don't listen to these people.

I was able to transfer from a nationally accredited college (ITT Technical Institute) to Kaplan University, a regionally accredited college. Because I had an associate degree they gave me 90 credits automatically. I just finished my first term there with a 4.0, and I am excited about my next term.

I would say that there online classes are just as good as on-campus classes were for me at ITT Tech. Actually, I would say they are much better than ITT Tech was for me. I feel I have already learned a lot, and I look forward to getting my BA in web development with them.

They are expensive though, I must admit. But, there aren't very many affordable online alternatives with the same capacity, unless you are going to some fly-by-night college like Penn Foster getting only a certificate.

I would definitely recommend Kaplan to anyone. Their classes are ten weeks long, which is a much more comfortable and realistic contrast to online universities such as Phoenix or American Intercontinental University. Both of the latter I had to bail myself out of because classes were only five weeks and there was no real learning. Not so with Kaplan, and it is going well for me.

Yes, I fell for it! The commercials made you feel you were joining a university environment that would work with you to reach your objective. Well, from the begining, the admissions office personnel were pushy. Real "used car sales men" attitude. They did not listen to what you said, were impatient and rude, but kept calling you until they were sure you were enrolled. The classes and the instructors were great, except for the Effective Writing for IT professional instructor who had her opinion and views on how the English language should be used, regardless of references you may send her correcting her.

What was my last straw with this university is when I signed up, it was agreed my monthly payment would be $119.00 which I paid, then I was asked to pay over $800/month. I disputed this and the amount was reduced to $405/month. Does anyone smell a rat! Something here is not right! Be careful, be very careful when selecting your online university. Be sure to do your research, background check the university, be sure to get everything in writing, don't fax anything to the university as it seems they don't know if they are coming or going. They change their personnel like they change their shorts. This university is a disgrace and really needs to be monitored and its accreditation cancelled until a full investigation is done regarding their fees. Full disclosure is what I suggest you insist on when registering.
