Description

Today's publishing and printing industry is the seventh largest industry in the country, annually producing more than $200 billion in products. Because the industry is undergoing massive technological change and increasing its production by about $10 billion each year, it is continually in need of increased numbers of employees who are better educated than in the past and who are highly flexible and innovative in decision making. One of today's key areas in the printing and publishing industry is the production and publication of magazines and books using cross media digital applications as well as traditional printing processes. The Master of Science in Graphic Arts Publishing is oriented toward educating individuals of high competency for production and management positions in this multifaceted industry. Most existing programs in publishing taught in the United States are concerned with the historical/editorial/advertising aspects of the industry. This Master's program addresses publishing from the technological/production viewpoint (including its management) and considers its interrelationships with E-commerce, cross-media publishing, and the many digital and variable data aspects of printing as well as traditional printing models. The program is open to students with a variety of undergraduate degree backgrounds. A Foundation Program of courses (first available online in the summer 2002) is required of those students who need to acquire the requisite knowledge for graduate study in this field. (Foundation Program course requirements, if needed, are determined for each student during the application process. See information below concerning the Foundation Program.)The courses in this degree are taught on campus as well as online. Usually the same professor teaches the online course as well as the on-campus course. The online format anticipates that a student will normally take two courses each quarter and will attend a one-week summer course on campus after completing the first five required courses assigned to the first year of study. After completing any Foundation Program requirements, a student should be able to complete this Master of Science degree in a minimum of two years.
