GME Core Curriculum

Description

The GME Core Curriculum for Residents and Fellows was created to ensure that residency programs include a curriculum of ethical, socioeconomic, medical/legal, and cost-containment issues that affect graduate medical education and medical practice. Because the topics span all of the medical specialties, this is referred to as the GME 'core' curriculum. An online format was chosen to provide easy access for all residents, regardless of their rotation schedule or department. The list of subjects was developed based on feedback from program directors, faculty physicians, and residents themselves. Faculty include physicians and professors from the UIC College of Medicine and School of Public Health, as well as from outside the institution. The course design provides each participant with an opportunity to not only view materials but to engage in discussion and debate using electronic bulletin boards that are moderated by the faculty. To facilitate the exchange of ideas and information, residents are assigned to small groups that remain together for all of the modules. Credit for participation in each module is awarded upon completion.
