Current economic and social indicators point to the need for educating leaders in the health professions who can manage change within their fields, overcome organizational barriers, and effectively direct the future of health care delivery systems. The purpose of the Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) program is to provide the training necessary to produce effective leaders in health professions education. Accordingly, the program recruits health professionals who have, or are preparing for, educational leadership positions but who lack formal training in education and management.Acknowledging a wide diversity in educational and professional backgrounds, the MHPE offers some flexibility for candidates to design a curriculum that fits their needs and interests. The program encourages the use of the professional's home institution as a laboratory for the application of practical educational and managerial concepts. The online format allows professionals, especially from a distance, to pursue their degrees while keeping full time jobs. Students complete all courses using a web-based computer connection at their home or office and participate in an annual five day conference on campus.The program is meant for health professionals serving in or preparing for roles such as:Academic: department chairs, education deans, curriculum coordinators, residency or clinical training directorsHealth Care: education directors, program planners and evaluators, directors of health maintenance organizations with a focus on educationProfessional Societies and Research Associations: training directors, executive directors, liaisons for accreditation, continuing education planners International Health Agencies: officials responsible for training, education program directorsUpon completion of the MHPE degree, the student will have knowledge and skills in educational planning and evaluation, instructional design and assessment, and in leadership and management of educational programs involving health care systems.
