Description

Information literacy -- the ability to find and use information -- is the keystone of lifelong learning. Creating a foundation for lifelong learning is at the heart of the school library media program. The library media program combines effective learning and teaching strategies and activities with information access skills. The school library media specialist uses the information literacy standards for student learning to create and maintain a program . . . that will support lifelong learning. (Information Power, 1998).The school library media specialist who administers this program has many roles. These include teacher, instructional consultant, information facilitator, and administrator. Through these roles, the school library media specialist provides: access to information, formal and informal instructional and information (and, sometimes, technology) skills, and recommendations for instructional planning. (AECT, 1988)The mission of the library media program at The University of Montana-Missoula is to prepare teachers who will comfortably fill all of the roles in the library. Three tracks are available: 1) K-12 library media endorsement; 2) non-teaching library media minor; 3) Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Library Media Services.
