Brain Research in Education is supported by a grant from the Science Education Partnership Awards (SEPA) program of the National Center for Research Resources, National Institutes of Health. The program is a partnership of the UW School of Nursing, School of Medicine, College of Education, and UW Educational Outreach.Program Benefits: Science education reform calls for educators to utilize methods based on current brain research. This certificate program will enrich participants' understanding of the brain anatomy and physiology, allow examination of current research on the brain and its implications for the classroom, and explore innovative curricula and resources that meet the National Standards for Science Education Reform as well as Washington state's Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs).EALRs addressed during the program: Components of systems and connections within and among them;Skills and processes of science and technology; Scientific inquiry; Communication; Applying science knowledge and skills to solve problems or meet challenges; Science as a human endeavor; Designing and conducting investigations; Program Audience: This certificate program is primarily designed for educators of grades 4-9. Educators who teach other grades or who teach in informal educational settings are welcome to apply if interested.Program Structure and Credits: Brain Research in Education will engage a group of educators in a series of three distance learning Internet-based courses. The courses will be conducted in sequence. Priority for acceptance into the program will be given to educators who are applying for the entire certificate program. Teachers may enroll in an individual course on a space-available basis. Upon the successful completion of each course, participants earn three University of Washington credits at the graduate level. In addition, participants earn a UW Certificate of Achievement upon the successful completion of the three courses that comprise the program.During each class, participants will log on to the class Web site at the same time (synchronous mode) only once, for an orientation session. Afterward, they may interact with each other and the instructors in an asynchronous mode at times that are convenient to them.
