Description
Microprocessor-based computing devices are now all around us. At the heart of these systems are embedded programs written in C, C++ or Java. And these programs are embedded in information appliances that populate the far reaches of the Internet. Ninety-eight percent of all processors sold today are embedded. The MIT Media Lab has identified "things that think "computers in everything from overcoats to overshoes" as their next major focus. Embedded systems, which have been in use for 30 years, are taking center stage and are having an increasing impact on our everyday lives.Demand for software developers who understand the intricacies of programming these systems is at an all-time high. Certificate program participants develop the knowledge and skills necessary to program in the embedded and real-time systems environment, below the application interface. This program is designed for programmers, engineers and scientists with proficiency in the C or C++ programming languages. The program is a sequence of three noncredit courses offered in both classroom and distance learning formats. The classroom program may be started in autumn 2002 in Seattle; the distance learning program may be started in winter 2003.Program Benefits This program has been designed by UW faculty and leading professionals in the field. It is approved by the UW Department of Computer Science&Engineering, by the Department of Electrical Engineering in the UW College of Engineering, and by the Computing&Software Systems Department at UW Bothell. Leading experts in embedded systems technology serve as instructors, bringing their industry experience to the classroom. Evening classes, held on the UW campus, Seattle, are accessible to working adults. Distance learning courses allow location independence. Participants are evaluated in each course on the basis of standards established by the advisory board and instructors. Upon successful completion of all courses in the certificate program, participants earn a certificate, indicating that competency in the knowledge of embedded and real-time systems has been achieved.
