Description
Technical Computing Using MATLAB® In partnership with the UW Department of Applied MathematicsProgram Overview This program may be started anytime through distance learning. As many scientific disciplines become increasingly quantitative, skills in technical computing and computational methods are more and more essential in solving new and challenging problems in a variety of fields such as engineering, physical and earth sciences, biological and medical sciences, finance and resource management. This new credit distance learning program is designed for scientists, engineers, medical researchers and financial analysts who wish to acquire technical computing skills. Participants gain familiarity with MATLAB®, a high-performance interactive software package for numerical computation. Although some mathematical details are given, the program's two-course distance learning sequence emphasizes the use of tools rather than the theory underlying the software. The first course (AMATH 301) deals with MATLAB® basics, introducing commands for data handling, data manipulation and visualization. The tools, commands and programming structures learned in this first part are essential in dealing with the more complex applications in the second part of the certificate program. While the first course lays the foundation in basic MATLAB® structures common to all application areas, the second course (AMATH 581) is tailored to the specific interests, needs and background of the individual participant. Each student chooses from a variety of MATLAB® toolboxes, and familiarizes him/herself with advanced MATLAB® commands in a project-based problem-solving environment. The first course may be started anytime. The second course is scheduled to be available in Autumn 2001.Courses have been developed and approved by the UW Department of Applied Mathematics.Who Should Attend? Medical researchers, scientists, engineers and financial analysts.
