The UW Institute on Aging, in partnership with UW Extension, offers the Certificate Program in Gerontology (formerly the Certificate Program in Aging).This program is designed for health and human services professionals and others who are interested in acquiring basic knowledge about gerontology and geriatrics. The program covers the social, cultural, biological and psychological aspects of gerontology. Current issues on gerontology and the family in later life are also covered. The program is offered entirely through distance learning. Courses have been developed and approved by the UW Institute on Aging. Professionals and others who have an interest in gerontology and geriatrics, and those who provide services and products targeted to older adults will benefit from this program. The program examines a broad range of fundamental issues that comprise the elder experience. Professionals working in institutional and private settings gain a theoretical and practical understanding of the principles underlying management of care for elder clients, friends and/or family members. Those who have interests in optimizing the elder experience through personal services and products are able to make business, service and care decisions based on a foundation of theory and case study.What effects will this growth have on your career, and how can you prepare to be successful with this growing market? If you are in the gerontology field already, this program will help you understand and meet the changing health, social, financial and environmental needs of this population. The program will help you better understand older people's needs, and how you can redesign programs and services to meet these needs. Topics:Basic biological and psychological processes of aging, and pathological changes in these functions Social, cultural and economic factors that influence the quality of life of older adults The impact of social and health policies on health and social programs and services to older adults Ways to apply this knowledge to interactions with older adults in professional and personal settings The curriculum consists of 15 credits, comprised of five courses
