Description

"For every site," goes a well-known phrase, "there is an ideal use. For every use, there is an ideal site." In the middle, helping ensure that proposed uses settle on appropriate locations, is the thorough and thoughtful site planner. Professionals with site planning skills play an increasingly important role in a broad range of contextsin the public and private sector, for city, county, regional and state offices, in private planning and consulting firms, in corporate as well as community institutions. Students in the Certificate Program in Site Planning gain a solid foundation in site planning, covering residential, commercial and mixed-use development. They analyze potential development sites, formulate site plan programs and prepare conceptual site plan layout drawings based on the principles of ecologically sensitive and fiscally responsible site planning. This certificate program consists of three noncredit courses: Introduction to Site Planning, Site Planning in an Urban Context, and Site Planning for Neighborhoods and Communities. Focusing on design guidelines along with design review techniques and tools, as well as graphic and technical skills, the program gives planners new insights into the "craft" of site planning. In addition, participants improve their ability to interact effectively with diverse members of the site-planning team (builders, developers, architects and others) and to coordinate successfully with urban design consultants involved in local projects.By the end of the program, participants are positioned to work more effectively in long-range, strategic and master-planning contexts: physical project development planning, park planning and design. The format of this program represents an innovative combination of online learning with face-to-face field exercises; this format reduces "travel time," while maximizing dynamic, hands-on learning experiences. Twice each quarter, participants spend an intensive weekend (Friday and Saturday) on a variety of studio exercises and projects. In between the face-to-face sessions, students continue project work, guided by online suggestions, discussion of readings and feedback from instructors and classmates. Assignments lead to the development of implementable designs. This program is intended for current planning practitioners - planners, developers, engineers - with at least two years of experience. Architects, landscape architects and individuals interested in site development, permit review, design guidelines, and design review will benefit from participation. The program is also useful to professionals in allied fields, such as real estate development, environmental or land use law, and zoning code administration.
