Disappointed

When I attended there was not an ECE program. I was told by my mentor that if I did my student teaching in a classroom of K-3, I would be qualified in ECE as well as ELE ED. I did. My degree reads Pre-K- 6th grade. Upon trying to qualify for a bonus at a new position HR asked for clarification of Pre-K. I was sent a letter stating that that I completed a Ele ...

Perfect for the self motivated!!

I just started my 6th term and have to say this is the best possible option for working adults. The tuition cannot be beat. I cannot take 12 units at my local university for less than $3k, but I can take as many units as a can handle for about $2900 a term. That simply cannot be beat. Couple that with the fact that its a fully accredited institution AND you can login and work ...

Virtually no interaction is permitted among students
December 1, 2011
The school is real, it is accredited, and the degrees are a reputable way to attend college via distance learning. However, there are SEVERE deficiencies in the interactions that one expects in a college environment. The comments that repeatedly state "It's up to you" are drivel. Of course it's up to you. I did well in my six months at WGU. I got along well with my mentor, who was friendly enough but really didn't ...

You get what you put in to it

I have to say that this school is not for everyone. You have to be able to pace yourself, work hard and have a good grasp on the english language. The essays can be hard and detailed. There is alot of writing. I am in my first term, but I can see how people could be frustrated if you do not have the skills to write essays, and compile your own research. I have learned ...

I am grateful

I was not planning on writing a review, but couldn't believe some of the reviews I've read that are so negative! With 3 children at and under the age of five, I completed 37 units in five months...I felt totally supported, but also that my learning depended on me! It has been a great personal progress experience for me and I am so grateful for the WGU experience! I can hardly wait to take a ...

Love WGU!
March 12, 2011
I started my program at WGU in April of 2008. I had a 3 year old, a 10 month old, and my husband was serving in Iraq. I didn't have a schedule that was conducive to any traditional or most distance programs. I was really nervous about the 'competency based' program and the lack of info about WGU and I was very hesitant to commit myself to something so non-traditional, but it felt like the ...

It's up to you!
September 10, 2010
I have read a lot of reviews, and many of the negative reviews seem to be based on their lack of understanding on how the program works. It's based on how your work ethic and understanding of material is. There are course mentors for every class. Your "Mentor" is like a guidance counselor, not your instructor. The "course mentors" are like tutors. They answer your questions if you don't understand an assignment. I have had ...

Hi! I was looking into the school to become a educator... I'm wondering and really needing to talk to someone how has went to this school. I livein West Virginia. It would be nice to talk to someone who has graduated from this WGU. I'm currectly signed up for Shepherd University. I'm just worried that WGU is a fake school. I will be just wasting my time and money.

I am interested in pursuing this program online but have read conflicting information, specifically as to whether this program will be accepted in Oregon. Is there anyone here who knows or has investigated this?

It's clear from all the comments that WGU works well for some people and not so well for others. I hear the same said at times about the Big 10 school and Big East school my husband got his BS and MBA degrees from. That said, my experience overall was positive. I had 2 mentors, I found some tasks easier or harder than others, I had policies change while in the program, but in the end none of that delayed me and I'm happy overall. Wisconsin has some of the most demanding teaching licensing requirements in the country, but when I was done and submitted my application all went through smoothly. My host school for demonstration teaching commented that WGU was the most organized, but also most demanding of paperwork they had ever worked with. They were amazed at how thorough WGU is.

This school has been great for me! Working full time, having children and a military spouse, WGU has allowed me to work on my time. Yes, DODDS has hired teachers that have completed a WGU teaching degree. I will be student teaching in Sep, with a DODDS school in Germany. It is a challenge due to being able to procrastinate, but that is my own fault. WGU is all what you make of it. It does not do the work for you. You must make the effort.

I love WGU my mentor is wonderful. I struggled the first semester but with her help and her support i could not ask for a better school. I would not want to attend a school that is not NCATE and WGU is it too me a longtime to find a school that I was proud of and I finally found it. I am proud to say that I am a student at WGU and is looking forward to getting my degree in Special Education soon. Way to Go WGU. I will stand behind you 100% you have been there for me and helped me as i progressed in my studies.

I just started at WGU in May, after doing a lot of homework about online schools. The program for education is NCATE accredited, and as someone who has been through the NAEYC(NCATE for pre-schools) accreditation process I know how difficult it is to obtain. The program is not for someone who isn't able to learn on their own. There are no professors, the materials are made available to you and it is up to you if you learn it or not. The credits are not handed to you, you need to do the work. Things may get confusing at times, but the community boards are a great place to get answers to questions. My mentor, Wanda, is wonderful. I am so happy with WGU that I've convinced my husband to sign up. He's on the phone with his mentor as I write this.

My wife is a teacher who has a bachelor, master and specialist degrees in early education. I hear people complain that WGU is busy work. When she was going to "a brick and mortar" school all her degree programs required busy work. It's part of any program!

I am thrilled that I found such as high quality education at such a reasonable price! I am self-motivated and a quick learner. I learn best visually, so WGU works for me. For those that learn best aurally (by hearing) it might not be a good fit. I love that it is completely self-paced. Each task is broken down into steps so it is not overwhelming. I've met many great students that I email with on a daily basis. WGU goes the extra mile in preparing students for state certification. Here in California you cannot do student teaching through a district unless you are part of an accredited college like WGU.
