Indiana Wesleyan University Reviews:

IWU - BSBIS
September 19, 2008
First, I want to explain the two on Materials. The materials where excellent. Course books where up to date. weekly assignments where excellent. Requirements for assignment completion where detailed and provided a requirement that the information was learned. I would rate the materials a 8-9 in quality and quantity. The only reason I scored a 2 on this was how the materials where acquired. I was not able to purchase textbooks by finding the best ...

Why don't you wake up! Three-quarters of the remarks in this forum are negative. That indicated to most people that there is clearly a problem at IWU! There are issues that need to be addressed!

@Hook

The point was that public ridicule and religious bias has no place in education or in our society! That is what the other posters are trying to say I suppose! Don't even try to defend such behavior!

Those who are negative need to wake up! IWU is ranked in the top 10 conservative universities in America by US News and World Report. My guess is those who had a negative experience were looking to buy a degree, didnt want to work for it, and are making excuses. Typical of people in our world today.

I have to agree with 'concerned'! If what 'damaged' and 'Buddhist'are saying is true, that is truly disgraceful behavior!

I have concerns about IWU. Read the posts by' Buddhist'and 'Damaged'. Their posts should worry all of us. Buddhist was shunned because of his religious beliefs (that is way I understand from his post) and Damaged was ridiclued publicly. There is no room in academia or our society for such behavior! It should concern you as well IWU Grad! That is probably what that poster meant by 'Run like he'll from IWU'

DO NOT DO IT!!!! I had the pushiest enrollment counselor... should've been my first clue. I did the online MBA program, what a waste of time and money. They don't even call their teacher professors, they call them facilitators!!! These 'facilitators' don't even hardly respond, when they do it's with two word responses. One facilitator even had her own website in which she discusses online teaching as a way to make money on the side. I don't know about you, but I don't want to be a full time student with a teacher who is making money on the side, not with my $40,000. Also, I asked to have the accounting answers to the problems not assigned, I was told this wasn't allowed by the school and that I should be fine if I just did the homework problems. NEVER have I been told to not do additional problems! WHAT A MISTAKE! I wish I would have seen this website in my looking for reviews before I signed up. WHAT A MISTAKE!!!

Get out of IWU as soon as possible. Get a 'second opinion' at another university in a different teacher credentialing program. Don't listen to those misfits!

DO NOT ATTEND THIS UNIVERSITY IF YOU ARE OFF THE "NORMAL" SPECTRUM. The professors told me that teaching is not my calling. They also told me it was ok if I work at Walmart the rest of my life. They questioned whether I have the ability to lead students. They also alienated me in class by tell me "They have lost all respect for me" for not hearing a question. I did not answer the question so they just thought I was being a coward. I also had another professor call on every student except me. When I had the boldness after class to ask her why, she told me "If you can't talk to your professors, you can't teach." I also had another professor tell me "a real runner would not quit" after I quit track and cross country. He has never been a runner or in sports. Why would he care? He was my wind ensemble director. The only reason he would have said that was to hurt me. They didn't like me because I was so quiet. I have since taught in two positions. All students I have taken to solo and ensemble contest have received a first rating at district and state levels. My choir also received a first at contest. I still struggle with the thought that I can not be a good teacher because they did not see any potential in me. I still wonder if I have any potential. Because they alienated me, I now feel inferior to everyone.

These are some interesting comments, but as an IWU Grad Student I have to admit that I am not surprised.

The education you get at IWU is great, if you are willing to put in the work. There are a significant number of students who have no critical thinking skills, feel as though they must be spoon-fed information about the course content, and do not pull their weight in group projects.

Well, let me ask you, how is this any different from what you are going to experience in the real world? It isn't, and I can tell you from first hand experience that there are people who don't pull their weight on projects that work with you and that many people do not know how to think for themselves.

I personally feel like this school has opened my eyes to a better understanding of how to work with people who lack in life. Like another poster, I also found myself completing the group projects for the entire group and I arguing with a few people about what the intent of the instructions were. This isn't any different from any other graduate program that exists. Although I don't care for the group projects, I can't think of any career where working with others is not something you will do on a daily basis.

Some of the other negative posts have no "meat" to them. Someone wrote, "run like hell from this school". Why? That's all you wrote. What does that mean? How can you keep a tally of negative comments when the majority of them are baseless?

Why use facilitator? Because a Professor teaches, and a facilitator helps you along the way. This is a graduate level program I am discussing, if you are going to be a graduate student then you must be able to think for yourself and not be spoonfed everytime you get lost. Critical thinking applies here. The facilitator helps you where you get completely stuck.

Teaching is a job, and people make money doing it. If an individual discusses teaching online as a good way to make money, what's the big deal? Everyone knows that teaching college level is better money wise than teaching anywhere else. Hey, ever think that maybe she really enjoys it and wants to discuss her new found love with others?

As you can see, many of the posters would not gain much out of the IWU programs, because they don't know how to critically think. Critical thinking is key to IWU programs, and is covered in every syllabus and all course material. Yes, there are individuals in the programs who should not be there and who lack the knowledge of their peers. However, many of those individuals get weeded out or are asked to leave after the initial 8 courses.

I personally have learned a significant amount at IWU, and think I received a better education than many other schools have to offer.

IWU MBA program is a JOKE!! I had the misfortune of taking almost half of my classes before waking up and transferring to an AACSB accredited school. If you are getting an MBA make sure it is through an AACSB school. Regional accreditation means nothing! I took classes onsite at a "regional adult learning campus". Basically show up, turn in something when assignments are due and you will get an A. My last two classes I didn't open the book once and turned in JUNK for all my assignments and still got a very high A. Now I did this just because I knew I was transferring and I wanted to test my theory. I became suspicious after everybody in class always seemed to get As. During an MBA you do lots of group work. I read my group members papers and their contributions to group assignments. It was at best associates level work but probably closer to poor high school writing. During group assignments I would polish their contributions up (rewrite it to protect my grade)and turn it in. However, I have to assume their individual assignments were of the same quality only lacking someone to rewrite. Yet somehow they still got As and kept passing. Furthermore, the people in my class were mostly IWU alumni, meaning they had received a sub standard undergrad education. I am sure if you go to the Marion campus you will get a top notch education. However, the satellite campuses, online programs and the entire Adult Education program are ruining the reputation of the school. I would never send my child to IWU Marion because I know his or her degree would be cheapened by the diploma mill adult education program through out the region. The fact of the mater is almost nobody accepted to the adult education programs would be accepted to the Marion Campus. They need to uphold the same admissions requirements or they will continue to destroy their brand. In a very short time they will be down their with Phoenix, and Stayer. The whole system seemed wrong from the very beginning. My only wish is that I would have transferred sooner. The "facilitators" were unqualified, distracted and genuinely uninterested. There were a few exceptions but for the most part they were totally unqualified to teach. Most couldn't answer questions about the subject unless it was specifically addressed in their power point. Also I did not have one PHD facilitator. The faculty was all part time and taught one night a week (after their day job) from a power point presentation provide to them. In short stay away!!! IWU is a diploma mill! Don't get an associates, bachelors or masters from them!! It will be a waste of time and money. A traditional university will undoubtedly be harder (I know as my bachelors is from a state school and I am currently in a traditional AACSB MBA program)but the work will pay off and the degree will be respected.

I am currently attending IWU for the MBA program. I have just completed my fourth class so I do have a good understanding of the program. I would rate this program as excellent.

I attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana graduating in 2008 with a bachelors in Finance from the Kelly School of Business. This program is not as highly rated as the Kelly School of Business, but it still is an excellent choice. I know two other online graduates from this MBA program which is one of the reasons why I chose IWU. After graduation from this program, one received a promotion into a regional management position for their current company, and the other received a $7.00 per hour raise (~14,500) per year while keeping the exact same job (her choice).

I definitely do see why there are complaints about this program. It is difficult and very time consuming. I spend around 20+ hours per week doing homework in order to receive an A in the class. It would probably take 10-15 hours on average to maintain a B to C in each course. The first course isn't like this, but after the introduction course expect to work for it. For example, the ADM471P - Essentials of Accounting course (3 weeks long) is a pass or fail course. If you pass, you proceed to the ADM-514 Advanced Managerial Accounting course. This course is essentially a "weed-out" course. My class went from 15 students to five due to the rest failing the course. After this course, they combined other online cohorts together to get the class size back to a reasonable amount.

IWU is a very respectable school in the Indiana region. It is not going to create a program that would tarnish their high educational standing. If you want something really easy, I would not chose IWU. If you want a real education, IWU is a viable choice.

I would not recommend IWUs online courses. It was one of the worst experiences of my life! Although, I completed my Master's in Business... it was hard to complete an online degree with too many group projects when one or two people complete the project and the others complain and do not participate. Also, as a Christian institution the students within my "block" were not Christ-like during group interactions. For example, I completed my part of the group project by basically doing the entire project so someone else could cut and paste what was necessary; while I was in the hospital for Endometriosis surgery, and received a very public letter from one of the group participants that I was not pulling my wieght... I wrote the entire project! But wait! There's more! The were other group projects that had similar outcomes of public beratings to me... could have been because I publically acknowledge that I am Buddhist... not a Bible thumper that went to China to pass the word. However, the course work, textbooks, and instructors were fairly good. It is the attitude of the Christian's who were not Christ-like that ruined my graduate experience.

I, too, would advise you to be careful. Having received a four year degree from IWU, I found that IWU almost seems to be a trifurcated educational experience. On campus is strong, the satellite campuses are adequate, but the online experience is frankly lacking. After a period I truly felt that the only criteria to be accepted into the online program was that you had the cash to pay for it. Having only been able to attend part-time over the course of 10 years, I know firsthand that they have dilluted the entrance requirements substantially over that period for the online program. Moreover my wife took her IWU Associates degree to Indiana University to finish her BS and found that the majority of her classes would not transfer. I can't comment specifically on the MBA program, but would suggest that you research it further before signing up for the classes.

I am 4 days way from finishing my associates in business management and it has been such a great experience. The facilitators are wonderful, and it's been smooth sailing. Like someone else said, as long as you put forth the effort, the classes are not so bad. I would DEFINTELY recommend IWU!

I almost decided on this university for my masters degree. It was in the short list of about five universities. After researching a bit more and having contact with them I decided not to attend and received my MEd from another traditional B & M university with an online program. In retrospect (and based on the last two comments in this forum and comments I have read on other websites about this university) I am extremely glad I didn't attend IWU online. I do respect the opinions of the others in this forum that have expressed opposing views. I just feel that I made the correct decision for me.

I highly recommend that you get transfer credit information before attending this school! I have completed a MPA through another university with multiple management classes, and IWU would only transfer ONE class! They claim that it needs to be an "exact match" in order for it to transfer. I also received conflicting information which is why I will be appealing the balance for materials, fees and tuition.

I wasted my time "attending" the first few days of class only to find out that the credits from Leadership class that I was enrolled in couldn't be transferred. Make sure your advisor gets this information to you, or you will be stuck with a bill!

I will never recommend this school to anyone seeking an online degree. The only plus is materials included in the tuition.

I am currently working to finish my 3rd degree with IWU. I have taken one onsite class and am completing my second online master's degree. I would highly recommend both onsite and online programs. IWU makes it as simple as possible for those of us with busy lives, i.e., to your door book delivery. The cost is reasonable and the financial office is a dream to work with. My only problem has been that when online class books are changed or specific classes are updated you may find errors in the syllabus or grading grid. These glitches are few and usually fixed right away when brought to the facilitators attention. I would highly encourage you to enjoy the experience of IWU.

I have been attending IWU's online Associates in Criminal Justice for a little over a year. I have enjoyed the experience so far. The assignments are not that hard as long as you put a little effort into it. The only complaint that I have about the school is the group assignments. I know this is a problem with all online schools, so I don't put too much emphasis on it. Its just a pain in the butt when you are in a group and you are the only person to do the work. Or you end up doing the entire project on your own because they don't contribute.

As I said, aside from the problems that I have had in the group assignments, I have enjoyed the lessons, and feel I've gotten quite a bit out of it. I would definitely recommend IWU to anyone looking to do online schooling.

I love IWU, and I love John Wesley. The Campus is beautiful. The profs are personable and knowledgeable. It is up to date with technology and

Negative - The campus sometimes becomes a "Bubble" in that students become isolated from the community around them.
