Online Degree Reviews - 2007 Academic Probation Awards
Current and former students to online education now have a place to offer their knowledge of online degree programs through OnlineDegreeReviews.org. The peer ranked online degree review site provides students the ability to post reviews of online degrees, and rate the program based on several criteria, including the professors, educational materials, use of technology, and overall value.
Over the past year, five colleges have consistently received poor reviews from students on OnlineDegreeReviews.org and have qualified for the Online Degree Reviews Academic Probation Awards. These awards are calculated from the rankings by real students based on their experiences, such as issues with accreditation, or the ability to transfer credits when changing schools or going on to pursue a higher education such as a Masters degree or PhD. Sometimes these issues stem from potential employers not accepting or recognizing the online degrees. Furthermore, poor student services seem to be a common theme with the five colleges who have been awarded the Online Degree Reviews Academic Probation Awards. This may be a good indicator that prospective students should be urged to use caution and do their research before enrolling in any of these colleges. These schools may be a good fit for some people, but often they get poor reviews from students.
| College | Rating out of 10 | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Grantham University | 4.9 | Private |
|
What students had to say about the online degree program at Grantham University: "Grantham is really not an institution of higher learning, it is a business which is run like a used car lot. Once they get your money, forget about customer service until it is once again time to enroll." "All in all, I'm not happy with my experience. If I were to do it all again, I would have went with another school." "A horrible experience. You can't get in touch with the teachers, or support staff. They are only there to hassle you to re-enroll after you complete your semester." "Grantham is just about the most disturbing thing I have suffered in my educational quest. They offered much and delivered little..." |

| 2. Kaplan University | 5.5 | Non-profit |
|
What students had to say about the online degree program at Kaplan University: "Although the courses and teachers aren't so bad, but the whole school organization and overall personnel is a huge mess." "When I need help, people shove me off onto someone else, and I never feel satisfied with the way I am treated." |
||
| 3. Western Governors University | 5.9 | Non-profit |
|
What students had to say about the online degree program at Western Governors University: "My WGU experience was a depressing slog through low quality materials (20 year old training videos) and mind-numbing busy work." "I truly didn't study or buy books. The books don't correlate with the busy work. Anyone off the street could pass a WGU exam. The passing scores are often mid-30s and they're multiple choice!!" |

| 4. Warren National University | 6.2 | Private |
|
What students had to say about the online degree program at Warren National University: "Unaccredited. Unable to qualify for any graduate school with this degree. [High] value based on the large amount of classes they grant for "life experience". Decent materials. Can't recommend though." "If you're a mid-career professional this is a great place to get your degree. If you want to teach in a university or work for the government you can't use an unaccredited degree." |

| 5. University of Phoenix Online Campus | 6.7 | Private |
|
What students had to say about the online degree program at University of Phoenix Online Campus: "Working in teams (is) often difficult and stressful if other students don't put in equal effort. It also almost totally removes the 'flexibility' I was looking for in an online program - just how do you expect people to 'get together'?" "I find the entire "learning teams" thing to be very annoying" "Overall, U of P provides a minimally decent program" "I graduated from UoP. Since, I've been shocked at just how bad a reputation UoP really has in the business world. In speaking with several HR professionals at various organizations the concensus [sic] is overwhelmingly negative. If I had it to do all over again I would have NEVER inrolled [sic] here. DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE!!" |
