I am currently a student at UMUC. While the program is great, some of the faculty and staff, on the other hand needs some work. I was assigned a student advisor that I am yet to speak to (never available and doesn't answer or respond to phone calls or emails).....don't ...

University of Maryland University College has distance Doctor of Management program. Can anyone give me opinion on it if you are current student or been through the program all the way. Thanks.

Watch out for this one folks... this is not the U of Maryland of the Terps but UMUC. I have many military students coming back from overseas with horror stories of classes from this uni.

Jeff April 28, 2008 at 4:15 p.m.

UMUC is the evening school for non-traditional students for UMCP (the main University of Maryland campus). Just like any other school in the University of MD system, it is its own university. It has the University of MD system standing behind it.

I have taken a few courses here, in person and online. It is a 4 year state university, not a for profit business like so many online schools. It has all the advantages and disadvantages that brings- it is big with some administrative snafus, it has a lot of options, and it is a good school.

If they had an online or on campus evening MA in psychology or counseling I'd go there in an instant.

Re: Wedge:
A friend of mine graduated from there and printed on the degree is your area of study and "University of Maryland-University College".

USN O-6 (ret) June 9, 2008 at 9:32 p.m.

It will say University of Maryland-University College. It is a seperate school from U of Maryland. You can lose your job if you pretend it is from the real Maryland.

USN 0-6 (ret),
You seem to poke your nose on the pages for lots of schools. Did you flunk out of all of them?

Just a Guy July 29, 2008 at 9:45 p.m.

USN 0-6 is right. Go to a real school. All online schools are the same.

O6 didn't elaborate, but he's right. UMUC is not College Park. UMUC isn't even UMBC Baltimore County. The College Park crowd will go out of their way to remind people of the fact. Wear a Terps shirt but say you're from UMUC and you're shark bait. That's what O6 was getting at. UMUC is a perfectly adequate school for the workforce; nothing wrong or fishy about it. It is simply not an honest way to benefit off the prestige of the nationally-ranked Maryland Terp brand by going to UMUC. It takes very strong SAT/GPA/Essay/References to be a Terp, with some of the lowest acceptance rates in the nation, and UMUC is pretty much an open-door extension school and workforce training center where getting in means nothing, but graduating means everything. I wouldn't mind going to UMUC but they don't discount tuition for reservists unless its during deployment, exactly when I DON'T have time to take a class. (bang-zoom to the moon, Alice!)

Lets call it what it is everyone... no UMUC is not the University of Maryland College Park and most UMUC students will not try and say such... UMUC is a fantastic state school that puts the focus on adults. As a 27 year old student with a full time job UMUC is the perfect school for me to finish my degree. Its a very large school with a few administrative problems... but it offers something that many schools including UMCP don't offer and thats a chance for the working adult to finish his/her degree at night or online... if thats what you are looking for then UMUC is the right school for you. If not... then pick a different school.

I went to U MD @ college Park and just want to clarify: UMUC is NOT just an online school. College Park is the flagship of the University of Md system, so perhaps that's where people are confused. But UMUC is a part of the University of MD system and has been around since 1947, so it's an accredited school-- anyone who has a degree from there should be proud of themselves. It focuses more on working adults and those who want to return to school to get their degree.

watch out they are in bed with the banks. They wont use your financial aid or scholorships.

UMUC is a well established University with both classroom and online courses just like many of the other major schools. I graduated with a B.S. in Management Studies and enjoyed every minute of it. If it wasn't for their support of the U.S. Military Overseas, I wouldn't have earned my degree. All schools have issues, accept the fact and move on.

UMUC Student/Military May 20, 2009 at 7:08 p.m.

I am currently a UMUC finance student and active duty military. I have been attending this school since 2006 and I have enjoyed my experience. The flexibility that the online degree program offers is excellent, especially when you work in a unit with a high ops tempo.

I don't have any complaints as far as the school is concerned: I feel that I am getting a quality education, most of the professors I've had have outstanding credentials, and financial aide and student advisory has been adequate. To be honest, my only concern for the school is outsider perception. You don't need to look further than recent postings to see peoples' automatic bias against this school. My concern is that this could potentially hinder my ability to get a decent job, let alone an interview.

That being said, it appears that students from this school are widely sought after by employers (government/private) in the maryland/Washington D.C. area, which is awesome--if you live or plan on living in that area. This makes sense since many UMUC students do tend to be disciplined working adults, and not-to-mention, people with a military backround.

For students in my circumstance, I imagine we may run in to difficulties explaining where we went to school and why it isn't associated with the Smith School of Business, more importantly, why our degree isn't backed by an AACSB institution.

Those are my major concerns, but, they're not entirely warranted because I simply don't know the truth; I'm just speculating.

Before going to this school I recommend researching the schools of interest to employers from the field you'd like to work in. If you're just trying to get some general credits, this school is fine without doing any research--your credits WILL transfer.

I hope you found this insightful. Thanks!

Off topic here, but I'm wondering: Have you killed anybody and if so what was it like?

Nystrjjr July 6, 2009 at 11:24 a.m.

I'm just wondering how marketable is a UMUC degree? When I was on terminal leave from the Army I worked for a staffing firm and learned a lot about the real world (outside the government) and online degrees (Univ of Phx, Webster, National etc.) employers won't even look at. The same with an international degree (employers have no way of verification) Has anyone landed a career(outside of government service to include a contract postion) because of a UMUC degree?

ghost October 21, 2009 at 4:20 a.m.

Nystrjjr said it, how marketable is a UMUC degree? This statement is why I am seeking education from another institution. I am a life-long Marylander and a current UMUC student attending as a working adult. Though they share the same campus, UMUC is NOT the University of Maryland, that title belongs to UMCP.

College Park students have never gone nor had to distinguish themselves from the other MD campuses, they simply say they went to the University of Maryland, which is correct. UMUC students are not attending the University of Maryland, I'm sorry. UMUC is a separate institution, governed by the same board of regents, and generating attendance from the use of the University of Maryland name, that belongs solely to the institution of UMCP. This is borderline of fraud.

I chose this school because I thought that I would be graduating from the University of MD and thought I could tell employers that I attended the school that I grew up around. I cant say that I simply attended U of MD, that would be incorrect. The diploma states UMUC in its entirety and not U of MD solely, which is how the UMCP diploma is stated.

The UMUC diploma does not, and I will repeat DOES NOT carry the same weight with employers as does the degree/diploma earned at U of MD. It is like choosing one of those other online education providers with campuses all over the country. I can not say that I have not learned anything, but they do lack minor modern technology delivery methods. My main issue is with the marketability of my diploma. This is why I am switching institutions. I can not afford to continue my education with a college that deceives the public by drawing credit through the use of a name that clearly belongs to another. Is it identity theft?

I should have researched this further before I enrolled. But they do not make it easy to find out this information, nor do they try to disclose that they are a completely separate institution not considered attending the U of MD, and that your degree and diploma is not the same degree as you would earn at the University of Maryland. I have been lying to people thinking I was attending this institution, my apologies to them.

The University System of Maryland comprises a number of schools, including both UMCP and UMUC. They are in the same umbrella system.

That being said ONLY UMCP and UM Baltimore (not UMBC) are allowed to say "University of Maryland."

They wanted it to be clear that the Flagship schools (UMCP and Baltimore) were different than say UM Frostburg or whatever. It is still a school in the University System of Maryland. So it is a state school. Don't feel you are any worse than any other school in the system just because you can't say UM. UMBC can't say that either and that is certainly an excellent school.
